“You better check yo self before you wreck yo self” – I probably don’t strike many as the sort of person who listens to Ice Cube and songs about AK47’s and shotgun shells, but I do occasionally…
After all, at the age of 8, I was indeed a “BULL3T G4NGST3R 4 LYF” (that’s a whole other story, for another time!!), but the opening lyrics do actually make a lot of sense and I refer back to them in my mind on an almost daily basis! I’ve spoken about this in previous blog posts before, but it’s not a necessarily common practice for people to actually step back and check themselves, to check if what they’re doing is right, or how they’re acting is right or just if how they’re living is right or the best thing for them.
We’re all guilty of thinking things about certain people, or reacting in a certain way towards something or having fixed opinions on certain issues, however, often we’re wrong or our thinking is outdated, biased or isn’t actually helping us and so by ‘checking yo self’ and taking some time to really think, you can actually end up making improvements, better choices and growing as a person.
I thought that I was always on top of this, but lately I realised that in fact, I wasn’t checking myself enough and I wasn’t checking out how I was acting, reacting and thinking, as much as I probably should’ve been and this allowed bad habits to creep in and for negative mindsets to try and dig their claws into my mind.
Luckily, I noticed this after a while and have since gone back to regularly stepping back, looking at the way I’m thinking and acting and making sure I don’t get dragged back into that sort of lapse. Things are never plain sailing; things are never perfect and it’s impossible to always be the happiest person in the world, but if we can check ourselves out mentally when we’re feeling down or off-kilter; then we can do something about it, instead of letting ourselves be consumed by negative thoughts/energy.
Practice Letting It Go
When something goes wrong, we often hold onto it and let it keep chipping away at us, but the best thing we can do is accept it and as they sing in ‘Frozen’ – let it go. Otherwise, this one thing leads to another bad thing, and another, etc. and then it ends up consuming us and ruining our mood, our day and the cycle just goes on and on… Yeah, it’s not easy, but it’s worth working on!
So, as the wise philosopher Ice Cube once sang “You better check yo self before you wreck yo self” – all sarcasm aside – he makes a good point and one that we should all try and apply to ourselves in our lives and the more often it’s practised, the better!
