The red headed; Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez takes on the Kazakh Power Puncher Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin next weekend in what is one of boxing’s most anticipated match-ups.
This fight has the potential to go down in the history books as one of the most exciting, entertaining and explosive boxing matches in history, as these two elite fighters meet in the ring on September 16th.
For years now boxing fans have wanted this fight, but with very little amateur experience, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has been learning and perfecting his craft over the past 12 years as a Professional, since the age of 15 – his promoter Oscar De La Hoya has been slowly building him up and developing him under a watchful eye, all to get him ready for this moment to cement his legacy and to become the best fighter in the World.
On the other hand ‘GGG’ Gennady Golovkin has been ready for a while, the older fighter, now 35 years old, had an incredibly successful and impressive amateur career of 350 fights (345-5) and has yet to taste defeat as a Professional. The hard hitting World Champion from Kazakhstan has been on fire and has been knocking out his opponents left right and centre.
This fight has come at an interesting time in both fighters careers – with Alvarez coming into his prime years and Golovkin probably reaching an age where he is naturally predisposed to decline, it will be an interesting watch for sure as although GGG is the older of the two, he is also the more experienced and naturally bigger man – will these factors make a difference?
The only way we’ll find out is when that first bell goes and the two collide in the centre of the ring come next saturday!
The big question now is who will leave the ring victorious?
Will the faster hand speed, better upper body movement, variety of combinations and youth give Canelo the edge and the victory, or will the sheer Knockout power of GGG prove too much, or will it be his constant pressure, ram-rod jab and granite chin that earn Golovkin the victory?
The great thing is, nobody knows how this fight will go down and it really is a 50/50 fight which the fans have been crying out for and which has finally come to fruition!
In my opinion and also the opinion of the Legendary Bernard Hopkins – this fight could end up being very similar to Marvin Hagler Vs. John Mugabi – a hard fought contest which saw both men take punishing shots whilst dealing them out too in equal share.
The victory being earnt by Hagler who scored the Knockout in the 11th round – his sharp shots and accuracy ultimately proving too much for Mugabi to withstand in the end.
If this highly anticipated showdown between the Mexican and the Kazakhstan fighter with a ‘Mexican style’ lives up to the hype – which I’m sure it will – then we, as boxing fans, are in for a real treat and we will be witnessing a great moment in boxing history!
May the best man win and may the real fight fans be satisfied,
Enjoy the fight guys!!
